Dear NCBS, DBS-TIFR and Other fly researchers,

Venkatesh. C.R., Ph.D, had recently joined NCBS-Drosophila Resource and Stock Centre(NDRSC) as Fly Stock Curator. Here after, direct your queries and issues regarding the fly stocks that are available at NDRSC to him. Fly researchers can contact him for ordering, procuring and the stock maintenance and sharing policy.

We request external research groups (Other than NCBS and DBS-TIFR) also from now onwards to kindly request Venkatesh (venkateshcr@ncbs.res.in) for any fly stock that is available at NDRSC and for any further corresopondence.

Complaining is a good thing!

Dear All,

We have received a few complaints of stocks not containing/being what they advertise. We would like to take two steps to deal with this problem. One, we would like to get a reasonable estimate of how frequently there are problems with stocks in our collection. And two, we would like to clean out our collection of problematic stocks. This is a mammoth task and only possible if all users of the facility treat it as their own problem, which it undoubtedly is. Because, at the risk of preaching to the converted, a wrong stock can waste many precious weeks of experiments.

To this end, we have revived the complaints section on the blog. So, if you have a problem with your stock, please do take a few minutes to log onto the blog and submit your complaint via the "Write a Stock Review/Complaint" link, with a brief description of what the problem is. Gajendra, Raj and I will be intimated as soon as you lodge a complaint and will contact you regarding the specifics.

This method will allow us to have a record of the complaints made (invaluable in assessing error rates in our stocks) and will also help us clean out the facility. Additionally, you can log onto "View Reviews & Complaints" and check if anyone has made a complaint about a stock you are ordering.

All in all, it looks like there are only good things to be had by complaining!

April 15th is almost here and there are only 14 new orders for VDRC. So please think ahead and place orders for the things you might need - remember that it is MUCH cheaper to place orders in bulk rather than a few at a time.

Dear all,

Seems like people have now started using the search service. Depending on user feedback following changes have been implemented:

Bloomington stocks are now searchable by their Bloomington id e.g. BR1-01
Please go through the stock list and suggest additional columns that you want to be made searchable. You may simply comment on this blog post.
A few suggestions:

or.*gal4 will return all Or-gal4 stocks. Avoid using spaces in the search term.
If CGnumber search doesn't return any result then try searching only for the number.
Please report if you cannot find a particular stock which you know exists in the stock list. There are still many bugs in the search service code. Your feedback will help improve it.

Embedded on the blog, below the stock listing, is the FlySearch box. It is a search service for fly stocks.

Mini Instructions List:

Please enter a part of the genotype that you are searching.
Searching by rack/serial/stock no.s/other parameters will be added in the future.
Searches are not case-sensitive.
Spaces are ignored.
Knowing RegEx may help better.
e.g.: to search for all UAS-XFPs use: uas.*fp as the search term.

Hello!

What we have new on the blog should get rid of these long silences. We now have multiple people who are authors. This is basically because we often send out papers/resources that have caught our attention to people who might be interested. Now people can put up these links on the blog itself. And remember, you can exchange comments on the posts peoepl put up.

So, go ahead, knock yourself out!

We also have a list of TRiP lines avaliable with us and will soon have the antibody list up as well.

The Diwali Post.

I hope everyone has had a good Diwali - smokeless, noiseless, diya-lit, and rangoli-filled. But I guess that's not everyone's idea of a good Diwali.

This post is for two purposes really.

The first is that I have noticed people having trouble ordering flies using our online system because writing entire genotypes can be a pain. Especially since we can't order numerous flies per requisition. So what Gajendra & Co. have done is given each fly their own code. This is a unique code highlighted on the first column of every stock list. If you just use this to order the flies you want it might be easier for you and it most certainly will be easier for Gajendra & Co. So try it out.

The second thing is the announcement of the second NCBS-TIFR Quarterly Fly Retreat. This time we will be focussing on the behavioural studies being done by students. We have tried to incorporate some of the suggestions we got from the feedback last time. This means that we've tried to intersperse some non fly behaviour talks as well. And we've tried to get non-NCBS-TIFR people involved. (We are also considering being called The Not Just NCBS-TIFR Quarterly Not Just Fly Retreat'). I will post the details of the meeting anon.

Until then, have a yummy food (and other accompaniments) filled Diwali. (That's got to suit everyone right?)

Hi!

I hope that everyone is finding the new system convenient. Do let us know what you think about it.

We have a request: since the flies we have are:

a. numerous,
b. accessible to everyone, the world over,
c. not systematically documented in terms of source and user information,

we would like to clean out the stocks.

So can people please go through the lists (especially those under 'all stocks') and make sure that, atleast the stocks they have used and are familiar with, have all the complete information about them?

We have tried to streamline the fly ordering prosess. You will see new links on the side of the blog which allow you to either order flies that are already available at NCBS, need to be obtained from somewhere (for example Bloomington) or need to be ordered from VDRC. So please fill in the appropriate forms.

Also, you will see that there's a feedback form. So please tell us if the fly you've ordered was alright or there was a problem.
